The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

This week's guest post is by Kristy K. James, and it's an awesome post. I'm an 100% behind Kristy on this. Winter lovers, unite!

If I had to choose my favorite season, the one I love the most, it would have to be winter.  I’m not very quick to admit to this though because winter lovers seem to be a very small minority amongst the vast majority of summer lovers.  At least in my little corner of the world.  We can be heard whispering about it in checkout lines, and other crowded places, trying to keep our little secret so we don’t have to endure the ‘if looks could kill’ glares from those who consider us the enemy.

Sometimes I feel like I need to stand up in a support group and say, “Hi.  I’m Kristy, and I love winter.”

I don’t know who this couple is, but I’d love to be walking with them!

Seriously, though, what’s not to like about the weeks between November first and March thirty-first?  We experience an immediate relief from the negatives of the other seasons.  Snakes, mosquitoes, ragweed, and heat indexes so high it’s hard to breathe most days.  Sure we also have to say goodbye (temporarily) to fresh air flowing into our homes through wide open windows, flowers, swimming and picnics, but we get to trade them for other wonderful things.

Yes, wonderful things.

Even the most hardened cynic can’t deny the beauty of snow.  I can’t think of anything I enjoy more than sitting near the window in my office, wearing my favorite sweater and fuzzy socks, sipping a cup of hot cocoa while snowflakes cover the evergreen tree, and watching as the occasional cardinal stops by to have a snack at the bird feeder.

But that’s not all.

Only in winter can we enjoy sleigh rides, followed by a roaring bonfire, huddling close to stay warm and roasting marshmallows.  For those who are more graceful than I am, there’s skating and skiing, both downhill and cross-country.  For kids, young and old, snowball fights, snow forts and snow angels.  Let’s not forget snowmen, women, bears, and dogs either.  Anything your imagination can conjure up can be constructed from snow with enough patience and help.

It’s the time of year when our ovens, crock pots and bread machines get used the most, filling our homes with the mouth watering aroma of breads, cookies, roasts and casseroles.  When we can light candles to our hearts content, make use of our fireplaces and wood stoves, and just snuggle in like bears, hibernating until spring.

Yes, my name is Kristy and…I love winter!  I’m not apologizing for it anymore.

All About Kristy

Kristy K. James' first goal in life was to work in law enforcement, until the night she called the police to check out a scary noise in her yard. Realizing that she might someday have to check out scary noises in other dark yards if she continued on that path, she turned to her other favorite love, writing. Since then, her days have been filled with being a mom and reluctant zookeeper (7 pets), creating stories and looking for trouble in her kitchen.

  1. I'm with you Kristy and Samantha. I wish our winters in my area of the country had more sunny days, but I love snow, I love winter - the whole season, and really, other than spring which is my second favorite, could do without the other two seasons!

  2. I think enjoying winter is a requirement for living in Canada :) My favorite seasons are actually spring and fall, but unlike most people I hate summer. I don't like flies. I don't like mosquitoes or ticks. And I really, really don't like humidity and sitting in a puddle of sweat. If I had to choose, I'd take winter over summer any day.

  3. We are NOT alone, Samantha!

I do like fall, Lynette. It's a close runner up to winter for me. I could like spring better if summer didn't follow it immediately.

And I agree, Marcy! I'd add one more thing to the list of dislikes in summer though...snakes. And the way the air smells after a rain, when there are worms all over the pavement.

But yes, if I had to choose, it would be winter over summer, hands down. I don't deal well with excessive heat and humidity. Yuck. :)

  4. Thank you Samantha for hosting Kristy!

And thank you Kristy for writing about my favorite season. I love winter. I have always loved winter. I love the change in seasons, a warm fire, hot tea, sweaters, socks and sweats.

    Fabulous post! :)

  5. I love snow when I'm not driving in it. And living in California, we don't deal with snow very often at all, unless we live in the mountains, and I don't. We don't get the humidity here in the summer either. I sympathize with everyone who has to endure humid, hot summers. That first video clips is something. Wow, strolling in a blizzard! And Dean Martin had such an awesome voice. I enjoyed this post, even though I'm not a winter lover, but you make it sound so appealing, Kristy!

Thanks for hosting Kristy on your blog, Samantha.

  6. Hi, Karen and Lynn. Thanks for stopping by Samantha's blog. She is a sweetheart for hosting me, and I think I might have thanked her on Twitter yesterday, but I wouldn't bet my life on it so...thanks, Samantha!

Karen...thank you...and glad to meet another winter lover! Sweaters are my favorite article of clothing and I always say, when it's hot and humid out, that I can't wait for sweater season.

Lynn...I have a friend who lived in LA for quite awhile and she tells me about the lack of humidity. I might like Michigan summers but for that. That video with the couple is something isn't it? I walked my kids to school once in a snowstorm even heavier than that once. Technically school SHOULD have been cancelled, but we didn't mind. Within 90 seconds we all looked like snowmen and it was too much fun. Until I got home and started melting all over the hardwood floor. :)

  7. Oops...I meant to add, YES! Dean Martin had a totally awesome voice. Thanks to my mom having had a crush on him most of her life I enjoy his music. Surprisingly enough, one of my nieces loves him, too.

  8. It was my pleasure, Kristy!

I'm so happy to see so many winter lovers! It's definitely a season that gets a bad rep. I for one would rather be chilly in front of the fire than sweating on a beach somewhere.

  9. Me, too, Samantha! Every month between April and October I threaten to get a summer home in Greenland. I just feel more alive in the cooler months. Wish I could enjoy summer now like I did as a kid, but I suspect most of that love came from the fact that there was no school for three months! :)

  10. The winter you just described is something I read about or see in movies or TV. I'm a California girl. Sunny all the time! Eat your heart out girls. :P LOL! Just kidding!

Great guest post Kristy! It was a lot of fun to read. Thanks for hosting her Samantha.

  11. I admit, Debra, that sometimes the things I watch (most recently an independent series called 26 Miles, set on Catalina Island) makes me wish I lived near palm trees and sandy beaches. But I know I'd have to give up the fall colors and snow I get to experience here in Michigan to experience that lifestyle...and it's not something I'm willing to give up. :)

Glad you enjoyed the post. Now if I could just enjoy the snow I love... Guess it's going to be a brownish-green Christmas this year. Bah, humbug! :)

  12. Hey Kristy - great post ! I'm an indoor winter lover - all the things you mentioned - the snuggling, warm oven, fires in the fireplace,... the crockpot!! But, the minute I have to walk or drive in it (or stand out at the school bus with my little one) I suddenly remember why I'm really not a true winter person!

  13. I hear you, Kristy! 3 days before Christmas and we still have rain, not snow. So disappointing!

  14. Thanks, Karen! I, too, enjoy it more from indoors than from out...unless it stays right around 32 degrees. Anything much under that and I'm too cold. And I really don't mind driving in snow (it's freezing rain and ice that scare me). I've driven to Indiana before in the middle of a couple of snowstorms just because. And I do love walking in a heavy snowfall, but that only happens when it's comfortably cold outside. Bring on that frigid, bone chilling stuff though, and I want to be inside, snug and warm.

And it IS disappointing, Samantha. We have no snow in the 10 day forecast at all. Unless something changed since I checked last night. The brightest spot on my horizon is that my computer might be ready today. I'm as excited as a kid at Christmas over that, lol. :)

Kristy, that's the way the winters I imagine are, but, alas, I live in coastal S.C., and we never get snow. I think it was almost 80 degrees here today, but I can always *dream* of a white Christmas.

    XOXO, Jenny

  16. That's all we're going to be doing this year, too, Jenny...dreaming of a white Christmas. But wow...80 degrees?! I just can't imagine that at Christmastime. Of course I've lived in Michigan most of my life, too.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season...and hope to stop by your blog again soon. Waiting on computer repairs so I can actually visit websites without having to restart my browser (and sometime computer). XOXO :)
